  1. Similar to the story I read, When the Negro was in Vogue, Ainsley's story discusses a flock of geese coming to a new area and causing chaos. During the Harlem Renaissance, many white folks traveled from Manhattan to Harlem to the Shuffle Alongs, and it caused tension between the people. It was a culture shock, which is often described in Modernism writing. The poem differed from my story because it dealt with the disillusion and naturalistic side of modernism while mine documented a decade.
The sad tone of Slifer's poem resonated with me. The sympathetic story line of a positive little girl's death was attention grabbing.

  2. Our poems are very similar in that they both have a very sad tone. In your poem, it is assumed that the little girl dies and in mine the old woman takes the life a little girl, as well as the lives of a young couple. Both of our poems have kind of a creepy vibe, as well as similar themes. Your poem is a great example of modernist writing because it does have some loss and despair involved with it, which are common characteristics of modernism.

  3. This is different from The Tropics in New York because this poem deals with an almost reasonless depression that falls upon a cheerful girl, while the speaker in The Tropics gives his reason for being depressed. A lot of the time in modernism the characters are depressed people, and that is true in this poem.

  4. Ainsley's poem is similar to Anyone Who Lived in a Pretty How Town because they both speak of death and dying. In Ainsley's, they speak and kind of describe the little girl's death but in mine it is more of speaking of someone dying in the town and people cry but then the world keeps moving and it doesn't really get into details as it seems to in Ainsley's. I felt that the way it was written was depressing and it made you think of what happened, or what went wrong. In my poem it begins happy and cheerful and upbeat and fast paced with happy tears and speaks of marriage and the seasons and then it goes into someone dying and people cry and then sad tears but i feel that it just portrays the people as not caring and moving on with their lives as the seasons change.

  5. Our poems are very different because your poem is a gloomy, sad mood while mine talks about pears and describes them. They really have nothing to do with each other so I feel that there is nothing to relate ours on. I liked your examples that you came up with though.

  6. The poem you analyzed had a negative theme while mine was a lot more positive. My poem was just about bragging the city of Chicago while yours gets a lot more deep. Your poem fits really well into the Modernism time period because of the loss/despair aspect.

  7. My poem was similar to your story because mine too was about a little girl who was called something and she sort of went into a depression stage also. The thing that stood out to me was how things would stay in that little girls mind and it would stick to her forever. Which is very similar to my story.

  8. Both of our pieces had a negative theme. They were negative about different things, but still negative together. It fits the modernism period because of the loss and despair characteristic. Your poem had a more sad mood, where as mine was very angry.

  9. This poem was similar to mine because both of the characters seemed to be positive people but also had a negative side to them too. They are different because yours takes on a different state of mind and shows the psychological aspect of things while mine takes on the role of love and explores the more positive sides of it.The thing that stood out to me the most was that tone of your story and how negative the character was really made out to be.

  10. Our poems are similar because both have a negative tone. My poem focused on the negative opinion religion, philosophy and science have had on mother nature. The thing that stood out to me was the gloom about the situation of the girl and how that expressed modernism.

  11. Both of our pieces had a negative theme. They were different in the ways that they were negative, but they were both sad stories. They were similar in the element that they had the despair feeling. This makes it a good example of the writing of Modernism. It stood out to me that your character was described in the negative way that they were.

  12. Our poems are very different because mine has a more upbeat tone to the poem whereas yours does not. Im glad that mine did because I don't really enjoy reading negative things.

  13. Our poems are very different from each other in many ways. Firstly, they both have two very different tones. Although they are both about grievous topics (racism and suicide/depression), there is a very different tone about them. In the poem you analyzed, there is a sad, depressing, and eerie tone throughout, whereas in the poem I analyzed, the tone is hopeful and fiery!
